A question for Murph

what kind of shutter do you use to get a good picture of a driving f1 car?

depends on how close I am to the track and whether the car is coming towards me or I am panning the car as it sweeps by.

To me, the most important part of the equation is setting my F-stop...... If the car is coming towards me, I like to have at least an F-stop of f11, that way if I focus on the helmet, the entire car "should" be" pretty sharp. This should compute to a shutter speed of around 1/250 to 1/500 a second. If I am panning the car as it sweeps by and I am not real close to the track ( good example would have been at Imola when we were at Acque Mineralli on Saturday) I can get by with an F-stop of F8 in cloudy conditions to F16 in sunny conditions. This would come out to about a shutter speed of around 1/250 a sec. The toughest shot for me is when the car is coming thru a corner (example would have been Imola when i took pics at Tosa and at Indy when I shoot at turn 9/10) as the car sems to moving in 3 directions (at me, back end is swinging out, and if the track is bumpy the car is bouncing up & down).... I have a hell of a time with this shot. I have found the best thing to do is try to keep the shutter speed no lower than 1/500 a second as with that fast speed at least 2 odf the 3 movements will be "frozen".

When I took my photo classes.... a "rule of thumb" was that your shutter speed should be no slower than the length of your lens..... example.... If I am shooting with a 400mm. lens, my shutter speed should be no slower than 1/400 a second. I shoot slower than that but I believe that my lifting weights over the past 40+ years allows me to be able to hold my 400mm lens with out shaking it at slower shutter speeds.

The great thing about digital cameras is that you can check to see if you got the picture "right" instantly..... and if the photo is a little blurry, change the f-stop and go to a faster shutter speed right then and there.......... it's so simple even Ger can take great pics like he did at Spa and at Imola as well !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    hope this helps......

    ciao
