  • Emmet,

    Thanks for your concern.

I wear a mask at times and have to watch out for disorientated locals.
The smokers still gather outside the offices in their smoking zones and look
    rather foolish.

Visibility has been between 500-1000m in most areas.
My office is at one end of the KLCC Twin towers complex and most of the time
    can hardly see the towers.

The attendance at our last run was down to about half the usual and it is
    getting depressing.

How's San Francisco? Fallen down any cracks lately? or been mugged?
Seriously, hope all is well there.

Did the Shuttle land at your place?
We were all relieved when they got back OK. The vehicle was in really good shape too by all reports.

Have a breath of fresh air for me.

    Thanks,

  • Actually the Shuttle lands down south, I believe at our big testing facility at Edwards. :P
  • Thanks Jello,
I knew it was at Edwards but didn't know where the base is.

Frankly, I admit it 's sometime faster to ask on ForzaMinardi than do a search......

.....or was I giving Emmet a chance to blast me for my ignorance.......
    ....(feels for bite)

so where exactly is home for you Jello? I had the feeling it was a little South of the Chairman of MCSF.

"Actually the Shuttle lands down south" ?? you expect it to fly and land again?

  • Actually, I'm to the east. :P

Quigley is in the city itself, San Francisco. I'm in a town right smack next to Oakland, just across the bridge from Quigs. NASA is located a few miles (though it takes a couple hours to get through the traffic) south of San Fran in Mountain View. Edwards is a few hundred miles south of us, in the Mojave Desert. Ames is the one in Mountain View, where Emmett works, and Dryden is the one at Edwards. Correct me if I've gone wrong anywhere Quigs.

I used the plural "lands" because it's landed there previously when weather forbids a Florida landing and I expect future missions to also land in our great state.
  • sorry emmet, didn't visit here for a few days...

yesss! we are cough cough cough, arrrhhhh, cough, eeewwwaaaattt (clearing throat of flam), cough, cough ok....

    drat must stop my smoking...

thanks for the concern...we'll survive, i think....pity the prize for the betting section seemed somewhat diminished in status...

    here's this morning's story...

FOG THE INDONESIANS FOR THE FOGGING HAZE! COUGH, COUGH...FOG ME!

    Clearer Sky Ahead

THE change in wind direction from south-west to south-easterly in the next one week will bring some relief to the current haze that blanketed Kuala Lumpur and Selangor in the past week.

The weatherman says Malaysia will see “clearer skies and cleaner air.”
This is confirmed by Metrological Services Department Forecast Service Director (central) Kang Thean Shong.

But, according to him, the shift is only temporarily.

“Because the Southwest Monsoon typically lasts until the end of September, the winds may shift direction again after a week and we might experience haze again.”

However, he said, again that will depend on the weather.

If there is rain, chances are the air many not be as polluted as this week.

Today, the Meteorological Services Department also carried out the cloud seeding operations.

The department got the help of the Royal Malaysian Air Force to do the job.

A RMAF Hercules C130 aircraft was used to fly and spray four tanks of salt water (sodium chloride) at the clouds.

The operation was done at Ipoh, Negeri Sembilan and Melaka.

Cloud seeding was also carried out at Ulu Bernam, Kuala Selangor, Batang Berjuntai, Rawang and Batu Caves.

The cloud seeding is expected to be carried out until the end of September.

According my contact at the department, this is how the cloud seeding was done:

For every 1,200 litres of water, they mixed 50kg of salt.

A spray is carryout to inject the salt at the base of the cumulus cloud at the height of between 2,000 and 2,700 metres.

The salt droplets will react with the cloud, causing the nucleus particles in the cloud to collide with each. The collision will cause the particles to grow bigger, thus dropping as rain.

The amount of rain will also depend on the atmospheric condition.

  • Hye guys - I'm glad things are clearing up over in your neck of the woods.

Not brathing decent air just can't be pleasant.

Doc - except for jello answering about OUR facility down south he was correct. Dryden is Ames sister facility and the place where all of our (Ames ) experimental aircraft were moved some years ago. I get there now and again but not nearly as much as in the old days. We have to take a special flight from our place to theirs and the landing is a bit sketch.

It is a real fantasy land.
